Gran Turismo is a 2023 American biographical coming-of-age sports drama film directed by Neill Blomkamp from a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin. Produced by Columbia Pictures, PlayStation Productions, Trigger Street Productions, and 2.0 Entertainment, it is based on the racing simulation video game series developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, while inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo player aspiring to be a race car driver. The film stars David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner, and Djimon Hounsou.
Development of a film based on Gran Turismo began in 2013, with Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti producing it and a script by Alex Tse. Joseph Kosinski was set to direct the film in June 2015, and Jon and Erich Hoeber would write a new screenplay. However, the Kosinski version was no longer moving forward as of 2018. The project was revived as part of the PlayStation Productions announced to be in development, with Blomkamp attached to direct. The main cast were confirmed in September, while other cast additions were signed in November. Filming began in Hungary in the same month, and wrapped in December 2022. In its post-production, editing was completed by Eddie Hamilton and the score was composed by Lorne Balfe, originally going to be scored by Stephen Barton.
Gran Turismo is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on August 11, 2023, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
